The LDS church has 125 temples worldwide (with 9 more under construction and an additional 3 announced).
The temples have served a multitude of purposes in the history of the church as it stands now the temples 2 main purposes are: to be the sacred location for special ordinances, and to be a House of Holiness where members can go to commune with God.
The Portland Oregon Temple is the 42nd Operating Temple. It was announced in 1984 and dedicated August 19-21, 1989.
It is in the modern, six spire design.
There are a handful of styles of architecture for Temples. They are mostly very beautiful.
