The dead center of Salt Lake City is formed by Temple Square, which is home to this building, the Salt Lake Temple, the main temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon Church.
Although the Temple is off-limits to non-Mormons, the square, and other buildings on it, are open to the public. Two visitor centers, and a good number of volunteers, are on hand to explain the Mormon theology and to recruit new adherents. I went out of my way to avoid contact with the volunteers, who can be overzealous.
