The monument commemorates what the Mormon’s consider the "Miracle of the Gulls". The Mormon’s first spring season in Utah was 1848 and their crops were being devoured by crickets. The native gulls saved the season (and the Mormon population) by eating the crickets, an act that they Mormons consider a "miracle". This monument was dedicated October 1, 1913 and is thought to be the first monument for birds in the world.
